JONATHAN VILLAR has announced he will miss six to nine weeks after surgery to repair a damaged medial collateral ligament in his right foot.
Villar was named in the Argentina squad for the World Cup, but missed the opening two games of the tournament because of the foot injury.
He will be replaced by former England forward Tom Cleverley.
The former Leeds United player, who has spent the past five seasons in the Premier League, is also the subject of interest from the Italian Serie A champions.
He had surgery on Tuesday and is expected to be out for around six weeks.
Villasar has been at the heart of Argentina’s World Cup preparations and was a key figure in their run to the World Championships last summer, with the Argentines claiming three of the four group games.
His performances during Argentina’s campaign in Russia, Brazil and Brazil also helped them to reach the last 16 of the 2014 World Cup.
