A woman in her 30s who was in critical condition after being attacked by a male friend in a hotel has died after doctors performed CPR on the man.
She was taken to a hospital in Laval, Quebec, where she died, said a statement from her family.
Her friend, Marquis C. Pinto, 32, was arrested Wednesday on charges of assault causing bodily harm, and the incident was being investigated by police.
He had been charged with manslaughter.
The woman’s friends were in a private room at the hotel, where the incident occurred in a public space, when they heard a noise.
The friends asked the man to leave the room and they started fighting, according to a statement by the Laval police.
The victim, who was not identified, had been unconscious when she was placed in the room, the statement said.
Police have not said whether the man’s friends tried to break up the fight.
Pinto, who is also charged with assault causing death, was released from prison in July, according a news release from Laval provincial police.
His lawyer, Serge Bouchard, did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
The woman was taken in critical care to hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead, said the Larnais police statement.
The investigation is ongoing, according, and police will present a report to the coroner.
